Straight flute taps have the strongest versatility. They can be processed with through holes or Blind holes on non-ferrous metals or ferrous metals. They are also the cheapest and have the strongest rigidity. Therefore, straight flute taps are generally preferred for processing materials with higher hardness (such as hardened steel above 40HRC), and the material whose chips are in the form of powder particles (such as cast iron and cast aluminum) will be the first choice for straight fluted taps.

Spiral flute taps are more suitable for processing thread in blind hole, and the chips are discharged upward during processing. Due to the helix angle, the actual cutting rake angle of the tap will increase as the helix angle increases. Experience tells us: For materials with higher hardness, the helix angle should be smaller, generally around 30 degrees, to ensure its own rigidity and help extend the life of the tap. For processing non-ferrous metals such as copper, aluminum, magnesium, and zinc, which are not very hard materials, the helix angle should be larger, which can be about 45 degrees. The cutting is sharper, which is good for chip removal.

Spiral point tap
When processing the thread, the chips are discharged forward, and the through-hole thread should preferentially adopt the spiral point tap. Since its design is based on the straight flute tap and then use the grinding wheel to cut a open obliquely at the tip of the blade, so its rigidity can be comparable to the straight flute tap.

Chip-free tap also called Fluteless tap, extrusion tap, thread forming tap or thread rolling tap. The processing method is to extrude the internal thread shape in the bottom hole through the plastic deformation of the material itself. Therefore, the target processing material cannot be too hard. It is mainly used for processing low hardness materials such as aluminum alloy and copper, as well as low carbon steel and stainless steel.
