Bentonite with montmorillonite as the main mineral composition of nonmetallic minerals, montmorillonite structure is made up of two silicon oxygen tetrahedron clip a layer of alumina 2:1 type of octahedral crystal structure, because of montmorillonite crystal cell layer structure formed by some cation, such as Cu, Mg, Na, K, etc., and the cation with montmorillonite crystal cell function is not very stable, easy to by other cation exchange, therefore has good ion exchange.

We collect certain molecules on the surface of bentonite, which is called bentonite adsorption.
This adsorption is widely used in industry.
For example, drilling mud often makes use of the adsorption characteristics of bentonite minerals to adjust the mud parameters for different purposes. For example, adding a fluid loss reducing agent means that one end of the polymer is adsorbed on the surface of bentonite particles and the other end is dissolved in water, thus creating an indirect relationship between bentonite particles and water molecules.
This creates a bridging effect that reduces the free water in the mud and changes the performance parameters of the mud, thus reducing the filtration rate.
