Product Description
5% Borated Polyethylene is manufactured to meet all applicable applications for industrial use, shielding applications, medical applications (with regards to cancer treatment), vaults, and doors for linear particle accelerators. Borated Polyethylene is effective shielding for support in all areas of security, i.e., seaports, airports, border protection and other applications requiring attenuation of thermal neutrons. The important factor is the Hydrogen Level in the PE. Our 2" & 3" thick have higher levels than the 1".

5% Borated Polyethylene Neutron Shielding Boards

5% Boron by weight to shield neutrons, are boron loaded PE(U)HMW grades. The high hydrogen content of PE (U)HMW makes it very suitable for slowing down fast neutrons to lower energy thermal (slow) neutrons, which are then absorbed by the added boron compound.
Whereas both PE-HMW and PE-UHMW are suitable for neutron shielding, PE-UHMW is often preferred because of its better deformation behaviour at high temperatures and its superior impact strength and wear resistance.

How Can I Fabricate and Finish it?
Use standard woodworking tools: table saws, table routers, drills, blades and bits. Carbide router bits with two to four flutes are recommended.

How to Care and Store?
  • Store the sheets flat on a level surface
  • Keep away from teak oil and other products that can stain the finish
  • Use china markers or water-based markers to draw patterns
  • Pen marks can usually be removed with household cleaners
  • Keep away from heat sources that exceed 180°F
  • Because there is no grain, parts can be cut from any area of the sheet
  • Save the scraps for small parts, shims, spacers and plugs
