Cellulose ether HPMC can extend the setting time of cement paste or mortar, delay the hydration kinetics of cement, which is conducive to improve the operable time of cement-based data, improve the time loss of mortar consistency and concrete slump, but it may also delay the construction progress, especially the bad influence on mortar and concrete used in low temperature environment.

In general, the higher the content of HPMC, the longer the coagulation time of cement slurry and mortar, and the more significant the delayed hydration kinetics. Cellulose ether can delay the hydration of the most important mineral phases of clinker in cement, namely, tricalcium aluminate (C3a) and tricalcium silicate (C3S), but the influence methods on their hydration kinetics are different. Cellulose ether mainly decreases the reaction rate of C3S in the acceleration period, while c3a-caso4 system mainly extends the induction period.

Further experiments show that cellulose ether HPMC can block the dissolution of C3a and C3S, delay the crystallization of calcium aluminate hydrate and calcium hydroxide, and reduce the nucleation and growth rate of c.s.h. on the surface of C3S particles, but has little effect on the crystallization of ettringite. The technical personnel of lihongde trading found that DS is the primary factor affecting cement hydration. The smaller DS is, the more significant the delay of cement hydration is. On the mechanism of cellulose ether HPMC delaying cement hydration. Sliva et al. Thought that cellulose ether increased the viscosity of pore solution, hindered the rate of ion movement, and then delayed the hydration of cement.
