ASTM 1215 Free Cutting Steel Square Bar

1215 steel is one kind of free cutting steel, sometimes with higher Sulphur content as 1215S material which offers cleaner finishes and higher tolerances. It is often takes as a higher quality alternative steel grade than 1018 steel with better machining and cutting properties. 1215 material can minimize tooling maintenance and improve the cutting ability and machine life of equipment. The most popular 1215 steel bar includes: steel round bar, bright steel bar, hexagon steel bar and cold drawn steel bar and cold drawn square bar.

Cold finished bars are produced from special bar quality hot rolled bars by cold drawing, turning, grinding, polishing, or by a combination of these methods.

Cold drawing increases a bar's yield strength and tensile strength, turning improves surface quality, grinding produces more precise tolerance ranges, and polishing further creates a smooth and attractive surface. Overall, cold finishing reduces the cross sectional area of the hot rolled bar. CF steel bars may be harder to work with than their hot rolled equivalents, but they make up for it with more accurate sizes, smooth surfaces, increased mechanical properties and machinability.

4.Heat Treatment of 1215 steel :
Forging:
Heat to 1300°C Hold until uniform Minimum forging temperature 900°C Air cool on completion

Annealing:

Cool in still air

Stress Relieving:
Heat to 500°C - 700°C
Cool in still air
