What's Genipin?
1. Genipin is the active compound found in the fruit of Gardenia jasminoides Ellis extract used as a Chinese traditional medicine to relieve the symptoms of type 2 diabetes.
2. Genipin is an excellent natural cross-linker for proteins, collagen, gelatin, and chitosan cross-linking. It has a low acute toxicity; much less toxic than glutaraldehyde and many other commonly used synthetic cross-linking reagents. It is also used for pharmaceutical purposes, such as choleretic action for liver diseases control.
How to produce genipin 98%?
Genipin 98% is generally prepared by extracting geniposide from gardenia gardenia, hydrolyzing it with betaglucosidase, then extracting it with ether, vacuum concentration and recrystallization to get the genipin.
Genipin 98% can also be produced by microbial transformation. The content of geniposide in eucommia ulmoides and gardenia gardeniae is relatively high, reaching about 3-8%.
However, because gardenia is easy to cultivate and has a large yield, geniposide is mainly produced from gardenia.
1. Genipin(geniposide) displays anti-amnestic, wound healing, anticancer, neuroprotective, cognition enhancing, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidative activities.
2. In animal models, Genipin(geniposide) inhibits acetylcholine esterase (AChE) , attenuating scopolamine-induced memory impairment. In ex vivo and in vivo models, genipin increases wound healing by inducing cross-linking of collagen.
3. Genipin(geniposide) also exerts anticancer activity, as it increases the Bax/Bcl-2 ratio and induces PARP cleavage and caspase-3- and caspase-9-mediated apoptosis in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) cells. In animal models, this compound upregulates nNOS and decreases acute inflammation through inhibition of LPS-induced NF-κB activity.
4. Additionally, Genipin(geniposide) inhibits Toll-like receptor (TLR) signaling and the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines, preventing sepsis and increasing survival in animal models of infection.
5. Genipin(geniposide) also upregulates mitochondrial uncoupling protein 2 (UCP2) levels in the kidney, postponing progression of diabetic neuropathy.
Other functions:
1. Genipin(geniposide) used as natural tattoo raw material.
2. Genipin(geniposide) used as blue pigment for food and printing.
3. Genipin(geniposide) used and cross linked agent.
1. Medical Use:
Genipin can be used as medical raw material, for liver protection, blood pressure reduce and bowels relieve.
2. Tattoo use:
Genipin can be as natural tattoo raw materials such as tattoo liquid due to it's natural extraction and no toxicity.
3. Food and printing use:
Genipin can react with amino acid to be Gardenia Blue which can be widely used in food, printing and dyeing industry;
4. Agent use:
Genipin can be used as a biological fingerprint capture reagents; or natural cross-linking agent for enzyme immobilization and preparation of gel capsules as well as for medicinal uses.
