Introduction:
Methanesulfonic acid is the simplest alkyl sulfonic acid.

Production methods
It is obtained by oxidizing methyl thiocyanate with nitric acid. The nitric acid and negative water were carefully heated to 80-88ºC, and methyl thiocyanate was added several times. The temperature automatically rose to about 105ºC. After the reaction was moderated, the product was heated to 120ºC and reacted for 5 hours. Dilute the coarse product with exchange water, add 25% barium hydroxide solution to pH 8-9, and filter. The filtrate was shrunk to the point of crystallization, and the nitrate was washed with methanol to obtain barium methanesulfonate. Then add the base to the exchange water boil, while hot add sulfuric acid decomposition, filtration, filtrate decompression concentration until no water, the finished product. Another method is obtained by chlorination, oxidation and hydrolysis of methyl isothiourea sulfate. When methyl isothiourea sulfate is added to water, chlorine gas is injected at 20-25ºC until the solution turns yellow, oil layer appears at the bottom of the bottle, temperature drops, and a large amount of residual chlorine is discharged from the exhaust pipe, etc., then the reaction ends. The reaction solution was extracted with chloroform. After drying, chloroform was distilled at 60-62ºC under atmospheric pressure, and then vacuum distillation was conducted. The fractions at 60-65ºC(2.67kPa) were collected to obtain methyl sulfonyl chloride. The base was added to 80ºC hot water under stirring and hydrolyzed for about 2h until the oil droplets in the reaction solution disappeared. Reaction solution decompression concentration to syrup, dilute with water, and then decompression concentration to steam out of water, methane sulfonic acid.
