Sulfamethoxazole is a sulfonamide bacteriostatic antibiotic. It is most often used as part of a synergistic combination with trimethoprim in a 5:1 ratio in co-trimoxazole (abbreviated SXT, SMX-TMP and SMZ-TMP,or TMP-SMX and TMP-SMZ), also known under trade names such as Bactrim, Septrin, or Septra.
 

As an antibacterial agent, it has a broad antibacterial spectrum and a strong antibacterial effect. It is particularly effective against Staphylococcus and Escherichia coli. Mainly used for the treatment of avian cholera anti-infectives, for the prevention of urinary tract infections, respiratory tract infections, intestinal infections, Salmonella infections, acute otitis media in children, meningitis, etc.
