1 4-Butanediol is one of the isomers of butanediol. It is the terminal dihydroxy substituent of butan e. It is a colorless viscous liquid at room temperature. Industrially, 1 4-butanediol is produced by reacting acetylene with two molecules of formaldehyde to generate 1  4-butynediol and then hydrogenating.
