Toltrazuril sulfone (Ponazuril) is a triazine-based antiprotozoal agent with clinical application in the treatment of equine protozoal myeloencephalomyelitis (EPM). It is a new drug against coccidiosis developed by the German Bayer. It was
approved by the US FDA in 2001 for the treatment of central mammalian diseases caused by coccidia such as Neosporahughsi and Sarcocystis. It is compared with the previous anticoccidial drug toltrazuril. In comparison, the
biggest feature of Ponazuril is that it can penetrate the blood-brain barrier and directly kill the protozoa located in the brain and cerebrospinal fluid, effectively alleviating the symptoms of EPM. Studies have shown that Ponazuril kills coccidia in animals without affecting the production of the animal's own immunity. With the enhancement of their own immunity, diseased animals can gradually get rid of dependence on drugs. At the same time, studies have shown that Ponazuril has a lower level of toxic effects.
