White, soft, bright powder. Industrial products contain a small amount of oleic acid and 7% magnesium oxide, odorless, odorless. Slightly soluble in water, soluble in hot ethanol solution
Also known as magnesium octadecate, is a kind of fatty acid salt type anionic surfactant, white powder, slightly smelly, with a greasy feeling. Soluble in hot aliphatic hydrocarbon, hot aromatic hydrocarbon and hot grease, but insoluble in alcohol and water, decompose into stearic acid and corresponding magnesium salt in case of strong acid.
Magnesium stearate has good adhesion and lubricity to skin. It is used in powder products in cosmetics to improve adhesion and lubricity.
Magnesium stearate can be used as a thermal stabilizer of polyvinyl chloride. Its stabilizing effect is similar to that of calcium stearate.
Magnesium stearate can also be used as mold release agent for plastic products, cosmetic powder, raw material for skin cream, powder mold agent for pharmaceutical tablets, paint translucent leveling agent.
Magnesium stearate is prepared in the laboratory by the double decomposition reaction of sodium stearate and magnesium sulfate, or by the combination of edible solid organic acids (stearic acid and palmitic acid) and magnesium oxide.
