Alprostadil is the naturally occurring prostaglandin E1 (PGE1) which displays a variety of pharmacologic actions. Alprostadil is a potent vasodilator agent that increases peripheral blood flow, inhibits platelet aggregation, and induces bronchodilation. Used in the treatment of erectile dysfunction, this agent produces corporal smooth muscle relaxation by binding to PGE receptors, resulting in the activation of adenylate cyclase and the subsequent accumulation of 3'5'-cAMP.
Alprostadil injection and suppositories are used to treat certain types of erectile dysfunction (impotence; inability to get or keep an erection) in men. Alprostadil injection is also sometimes used in combination with other tests to diagnose erectile dysfunction. Alprostadil is in a class of medications called vasodilators. It works by relaxing the muscles and blood vessels in the penis to keep enough blood in the penis so that an erection can occur.

How Effective Is It?
The injectable form causes an erection firm enough for sex in more than 80% of men with erectile dysfunction regardless of their age or the cause of their ED.
The suppository form is not as effective. It produces an erection in about 30%-40% of men with ED.
How Quickly Will Alprostadil Work?
It usually starts to work in about 5 to 20 minutes. Wait 10-30 minutes before you have sex. Your erection should last for about an hour and may continue after you ejaculate.
Don't use it more than three times a week. Wait at least 24 hours between each use.
