Introduction
Ketoconazole is a synthetic antifungal drug used to prevent and treat fungal skin infections,
especially in immunocompromised patients such as those with AIDS or those on chemotherapy.
Ketoconazole is sold commercially as an anti-dandruff shampoo, topical cream, and oral tablet.
Function
Ketoconazole is an imidazole broad-spectrum antifungal drug, which inhibits the biosynthesis of ergosterol on fungal cell membranes by highly selectively interfering with the activity of fungal cytochrome P-450.
It is effective for superficial and deep fungal infections. It can not only inhibit the growth of fungi, but also inhibit the transformation of spores into mycelium to prevent further infections.
Low concentration of bacteriostasis, high concentration of bactericidal. It has antibacterial effects on Candida, Coloring Fungi, Chemicalbook Coccidioidomyces, Histoplasma, Sporothrix and Trichophyton, etc.
Clinically, it is suitable for the treatment of tinea hand, tinea pedis, tinea corporis, tinea corporis, tinea cruris, thrush, tinea versicolor and candidiasis of the skin.
Ketoconazole lotion is used as a skin topical medicine. It is clinically mainly used to treat and prevent various infections caused by Malassezia, such as tinea versicolor, seborrheic dermatitis and pityriasis scalp (dandruff), and can quickly relieve the cause Desquamation and itching caused by seborrheic dermatitis and pityriasis of the scalp.
Hair loss
Ketoconazole shampoo in conjunction with an oral 5α-reductase inhibitor has been used off label to treat
and rogenic alopecia.
The antifungal properties of ketoconazole reduce scalp microflora and consequently may reduce follicular inflammation that contributes to alopecia.Limited clinical studies suggest ketoconazole shampoo used either alone or in combination with other treatments may be useful in reducing hair loss. At least one study has been performed showing that ketoconazole may be useful in temporarily reducing erectile function in postoperative penile surgery patients.
Veterinary use
Ketoconazole is also sometimes prescribed by veterinarians for use on pets, often as unflavored tablets that may need to be cut to smaller size for correct dosage.
