Individual metal wires are laid (twisted) into a helix to form a strand, which typically contains 7 wires (1 x 7) or 19 wires (1 x 19).
Wire rope is fabricated from a varying number of these strands, such as 7 x 7 and 7 x 19.

The term cable is often used interchangeably with wire rope.
in general, "wire rope" refers to diameter larger than 3/8 inch.
However, sizes smaller than this are designated as cable or cords.
