Berberine (2,3-methylenedioxy-9,10-dimethoxy-protoberberine) is an alkaloid extracted from various plants used in traditional Chinese medicine. It has been used historically in Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese medicine (vicariously through herbs which contain it) as an anti-microbial, anti-protozoal, and anti-diarrheal agent.

1. Berberine is used to reduce insulin resistance and improve biomarkers of type II diabetes such as fasting glucose and glycated hemoglobin.
