Gelatin (or gelatine) is a translucent, colorless, brittle (when dry), flavorless solid substance, derived from the collagen mainly inside pig skin (hide) and cattle bones. It is commonly used as a gelling agent in food, pharmaceuticals, photography, and cosmetic manufacturing. Substances containing gelatin or functioning in a similar way are called gelatinous. Gelatin is an irreversibly hydrolysed form of collagen, and is classified as a foodstuff. It is found in some gummy candies as well as other products such as marshmallows, gelatin dessert, and some ice cream and yogurt. Household gelatin comes in the form of sheets, granules, or powder. Probably best known as a gelling agent in cooking, different types and grades of Gelatin are used in a wide range of food and non-food products: Common examples of foods that contain gelatin are gelatin desserts, trifles, aspic, marshmallows, candy corn, and confections such as Peeps, gummy bears and jelly babies. Gelatin may be used as a stabilizer, thickener, or texturizer in foods such as jams, yogurt, cream cheese, and margarine; it is used, as well, in fat-reduced foods to simulate the mouthfeel of fat and to create volume without adding calories. Raw material finishing: sort different kinds of raw materials, such as cow leather and pig skin; Wet skin and dry skin shall be separated, and substandard skin shall be picked out for further treatment. The fur can be soaked in 5% lime milk or 0.5 ~ 1% vulcanization solution to remove the fur. The fat layer of fresh pig skin should be scraped off. Soak the dry skin in clean water.
Lime water pre immersion: put the finished leather raw materials into about 1% lime water for immersion for 1 ~ 2D, and then cut them into small pieces. Hydraulic decontamination: continuously add the skin and water into the hydraulic degreaser, and clean the fat and dirt by using the hydraulic impact and the mechanical action of high-speed hammer. Lime water impregnation: put the degreased skin into the impregnation tank and impregnate it with 2 ~ 4% lime water (specific gravity 1.015 ~ 1.035). The ratio of wet skin to water is 1:3 ~ 4, and the pH value is 12.0 ~ 12.5. The best temperature is 15 ºC, and the time is 15-90d. When the temperature is high, the concentration of lime water can be lower, and when the temperature is low, the concentration can increase. This process is called "hair skin"; It is one of the key processes in gelatin production. Washing and neutralization: after the skin block expands, take it out and wash it fully with water. After washing for many times, the final pH is 9.0 ~ 9.5. After washing, neutralize the remaining lime with acid, first add water to immerse the raw materials, and wash it with water under continuous stirring. Generally, it takes 8 ~ 12h to complete.
Glue boiling and concentration: first put hot water into the glue pot, and then pour in the raw materials. Be careful not to make the skin stick into a ball. At the same time, slowly raise the temperature to 55 ~ 65 ºC, and release the glue juice after hot soaking for 6 ~ 8h; Then add hot water into the pot to increase the water temperature by 5 ~ 100 ºC compared with the previous time, continue to boil the glue, and so on, for many times, and the temperature increases gradually each time, and the last time can be boiled. At about 600 ºC, the obtained thin glue juice is filtered by a plate and frame filter press with filter cotton, activated carbon or diatomite as filter aid, and the clear glue liquid is obtained.
The glue liquid is separated by a centrifuge to further remove impurities such as oil and grease. Then put the glue solution into the vacuum concentration tank and control the temperature to 65 ~ 700 ºC for evaporation and concentration. When the glue solution becomes thick, it can be changed to 60 ~ 650 ºC to continue vacuum concentration. Master the concentration of glue according to the quality of glue and the conditions of drying equipment. For example, when drying with cold and hot air air conditioning, the specific gravity of glue concentration is 1.050 ~ 1.080 (500 ºC), and the glue content is 23 ~ 33%. The gel is dried, concentrated by glue, and heated by adding a certain amount of hydrogen peroxide, sulfite or Paraben, which is both bleached and preservative. Drop the concentrated glue on the cold roll to form a thin glue strip, scrape it in the container and transport it to the drying bed for drying. When the hot and cold air is dried to gel at 10~12 C, the product is then crushed. It is also possible to obtain semi-circular spherical rubber particles after dropping the concentrated rubber liquid on the drum and drying.
