What is Latanoprost?

Latanoprost (pronounced la-TA-noe-prost) ophthalmic solution is a topical medication used for controlling the progression of glaucoma or ocular hypertension by reducing intraocular pressure. It is a prostaglandin analogue (more specifically an analogue of prostaglandin F2α) that works by increasing the outflow of aqueous fluid from the eyes (through the uvealsclearal tract).

What is Bimatoprost?

Latisse is an FDA-approved drug (bimatoprost ophthalmic solution, 0.03%) prescribed to lengthen, thicken and darken eyelashes. It has the same main ingredient as a glaucoma drug called Lumigan.

Bimatoprost is a type of medication primarily used to treat glaucoma and ocular eye hypertension, both conditions stemming from an usually high amount of pressure in the eyes. This medication has been proven to prevent ocular damage and reduce eye pain by lowering the amount of pressure in the eyes to within a normal range. Popular brands include Latisse and Lumigan.

 

Bimatoprost and Hair Restoration

Bimatoprost has a rejuvenating effects on the hair follicles. This was first noticed when the eye drops caused a lengthening and thickening of the eyelashes. According to one official study, "bimatoprost offers a novel, and apparently low-risk, approach for treating scalp alopecias". Although the exact mechanism at work is not yet understood, it is clear that the topical form stimulates the hair follicles to produce healthy hairs.

How to properly use Bimatoprost Eye Drops (Lumigan)

• Tilt back the head.
• Gently pull down on the lower eyelid.
• Using the dropper, drop the appropriate amount of medicine into your lower eyelid.
• Close your eye.
• Place your index finger at the corner of your eye closest to nose for one minute. This ensures the medicine is properly absorbed and does not run over the eyelid.
• Place the cap back on your dropper. Be sure to not let the tip of the dropper touch any surface.

What to do if you miss a Lumigan Dose

If you have forgotten a lumigan dose, use the eye drops as soon as possible, unless it is already close to your next dose, in which case wait. Never use more lumigan than your doctor has prescribed.

How to properly use Bimatoprost Eyelash Formula (Latisse)

• First, thoroughly wash your face. Remove any makeup (if applicable).
• Using the applicator, apply a single drop of the formula along the skin of the upper eyelashes.
• Using a cloth, dab any extra formula off of the skin. The eyelash solution of bimatoprost is known to stimulate hair follicle growth. Dabbing excess formula off of your skin prevents unwanted hair from growing around the eyes.
• Using a different applicator, repeat the process for the skin around the upper eyelashes of your other eye.
• Be sure to never use the product on the lower eyelashes.
• Be sure to never reuse the applicator. This prevents surface contaminations from reaching the delicate membranes of the eye. You should always throw away the applicator after every dose in order to prevent accidentally reusing the device.

Who should not take Bimatoprost?

If you have any of the following conditions, you may be excluded from this medication and should talk to your doctor:

• If you are pregnant or breastfeeding
• If you have a history of eye problems or previous eye injuries
• If you have ever had previous eye surgeries or plan to have upcoming eye surgeries

Tips for using Latisse:

• Latisse is not approved for people under the age of 18. Also, it is not recommended for pregnant or breastfeeding women.
• Since this is a prescription drug, Latisse should not be used by anyone other than the person to whom it was prescribed.
• If you wear contact lenses, take them out before using Latisse. Wait 15 minutes after using the drug before putting your contact lenses back in your eyes.
• Do not reuse the single-use applicator for this drug or contaminate the bottle by allowing the bottle tip to come into contact with any other surface, as this may lead to serious eye infection.
• If you develop a new eye condition, have a sudden decrease in your vision, have eye surgery or develop any eye reactions, immediately call your ophthalmologist. Only an ophthalmologist has the medical training in eye care to assess your particular reactions and conditions.
