appearance: Liquid, hygroscopic. Stable in soft water, hard water, salt, alkali and acidic solutions. It may become cloudy during storage, but it can be clarified by heating it to 40 degrees C. Can be mixed with water, the solution is neutral, soluble in polar organic solvents. It's irritating.
Biological applications:
NP40 is a non-ionized surfactant, commonly used in animal cells lysate. The antibody used in immunoprecipitation is the NP40 lysate used to identify the epitope of the conformation. If the antibody is identifying a linear antigen epitope (e.g. synthetic peptides), a strong denatured lysate (e.g. RIPA lysate) can be used.
