Loratadine is a medication used to treat allergies. This includes allergic rhinitis(hay fever) and hives. . It is taken by mouth.Common side effects include sleepiness, dry mouth, and headache.Serious side effects are rare and include allergic reactions,seizures, and liver problems.Use during pregnancy appears to be safe but has not been well studied. It is not recommended in children less than two years old.It is in the second-generation antihistamine family of medication.

Loratadine is indicated for the symptomatic relief of allergy such as hay fever (allergic rhinitis), urticaria (hives), chronic idiopathic urticaria,and other skin allergies.For allergic rhinitis (hay fever), loratadine is effective for both nasal and eye symptoms: sneezing, runny nose, itchy or burning eyes.

Loratadine Dosage:

Adults and children over the age of 6 are typically given 10 mg of loratadine per day. Children ages 2-5 should be limited to 5 mg or one teaspoon of the liquid form of loratadine per day. Children in this age group should not use loratadine tablets.

Talk with your doctor about this risk before you start using loratadine to ensure that the benefits will outweigh the risks. If you are breastfeeding you may need to avoid using loratadine because it can be transferred to your child through the breast milk, and children are at an increased risk for side effects when exposed to loratadine.

Adults and children with liver failure or renal insufficiency may need to adjust their dosing to ensure that the drug is sufficiently clearing from your system before you take another dose. In most cases, this will mean taking the same sized dose recommended for your age group, but limiting your dosing to every other day.
