Thiamphenicol is white to off-white crystalline powder or crystals. Melting point (ºC) 178-180 (mixed rotation), 164-166 (right rotation). Its chemical formula is [R-(R*,R*)]N-[1-(hydroxymethyl)-2-hydroxy-2-[4-(methylsulfonyl)phenyl]ethyl]-2,2 -Dichloroacetamide, easily soluble in dimethylformamide, slightly soluble in absolute ethanol, slightly soluble in water. Clinically, it is mainly used to treat respiratory, urinary, hepatobiliary, typhoid and other diseases such as intestinal surgery, obstetrics and gynecology and ENT infections, especially for mild to moderate infections.
The methylsulfone derivative of this strain of chloramphenicol is a synthetic broad-spectrum antibacterial drug. The antibacterial spectrum and antibacterial effect are basically similar to those of chloramphenicol. It mainly diffuses into bacterial cells and reversibly binds to the 50S of the bacterial ribosome. On the subunit, the growth of the peptide chain is hindered (may inhibit the effect of the transpeptidase), the formation of the peptide chain is inhibited, and the synthesis of protein is prevented, thereby playing an antibacterial effect.
Application & Function

 It is used in many countries as a veterinary antibiotic, but is available in China and Italy for use in humans. Its main advantage over chloramphenicol is that it has never been associated with aplastic anaemia.
Thiamphenicol is also widely used in Brazil, particularly for the treatment of sexually transmitted infections and pelvic inflammatory disease.Unlike chloramphenicol, thiamphenicol is is not readily metabolized in cattle, poultry, sheep,or humans, but is predominantly excreted unchanged. In pigs and rats the drug is excreted both as parent drug and as thiamphenicol glucuronate.
