Sulbactam is prepared by partial chemical synthesis from penicillins. The oxidation of the sulfur atom to a sulfone greatly enhances the potency of sulbactam. The combination of sulbactam and ampicillin (Unasyn) is now clinically popular.
Usesantidepressant, dopamine uptake inhibitor
UsesSulbactam sodium is a semi-synthetic penem antibiotic formed by the oxidation of penicillanic acid to its sulfone and was invented by Barth at Pfizer in 1978. Sulbactam sodium is a weak antibiotic but its action as an irreversible inhibitor of β-lactamase is exploited to block the degradation of other penicillin derivatives. Sulbactam acts as a synergist with cephalosporins and penicillins against Gram positive bacteria and is used commercially in combination with ampicillin.
UsesA β-lactamase inhibitor.
Application
Sulbactam : It is an irreversible and competitive β-lactamase inhibitor that can inhibit β-lactamase produced by both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria (except Pseudomonas aeruginosa). The single application is effective for peripheral infection of Neisseria gonorrhoeae and Meningococcus.Combination of sulbactam with ampicillin, cefoperazone, piperacillin, meloxicillin and so on for the treatment of respiratory tract, urinary tract, obstetrics and gynecology, abdominal cavity, skin and soft tissue, eye, ear, nose and throat, bone and joint infections as well as sepsis and meningitis caused by sensitive bacteria.Currently, sulbactam products produced in China are mainly ampicillin/sulbactam sodium combination preparations for intravenous or intramuscular injection
