DL-Tryptophan contains an α-aminogroup, an α-carboxylic acid group, and a side chainindole, making it a non-polar aromatic amino acid. Itis essential in humans, meaning the body cannotsynthesize it: it must be obtained from the diet.
DL-Tryptophan is also a precursor to the neurotransmitterserotonin and the hormone melatonin.
