This plant is ordinarily sold as Skullcap, but is also widely known as Scutellaria. The official species is the Scutellaria lateriflora, but the larger part of the drug sold upon the market under that name is derived from two other species of Scutellaria. This fruit consists of 2 round lips, the upper lip of which is helmet-shaped, giving to it the appearance of a mask or cap; hence the common name scullcap.

Scullcap is an indigenous herb, growing in damp places, such as fields, ditches and by ponds, flowering in July and August. Besides the names given above, it is known by the names of Blue scullcap, Side-flowering scullcap, Mad-dog weed, and Hoodwort. It is about 50cm (20 inches) long, smooth and branched, with leaves and flowers enclosing fruit. The herb has a slight odor and tastes bitter. Skullcap is gathered while in flower and dried in shade. Alcohol or boiling water extracts its properties.

Scullcap is tonic, nervine, and antispasmodic. It has proved especially useful in convulsions, tremors, intermittent fever, neuralgia, and many nervous affections. An infusion helps to produce a calm sleep, and has beneficial results when taken for nervous excitability, restlessness, or insomnia, following acute or chronic diseases, physical or mental overwork, or other causes. It can also help restore childrens health during teething.

Scullcap has been extolled as a remedy in hydrophobia, but this is still a matter of uncertainty. It certainly influences the cerebro-spinal centers, controlling nervous irritation, and this fact is well illustrated by its control over functional cardiac disorders, due to purely nervous causes.

1. Effects on digestive system: alcohol extract of huang qin or its ingredient baicalin can promotesecretion of bile but another ingredient wogonin does not have this effect.
