Pepsin is a digestive protease secreted by the gastric chief cell in the stomach. Its function is to break down proteins in food into small peptide fragments.The host cell secretes pepsinogen, which is stimulated by gastric acid or pepsin to form pepsin, but pepsin is not produced directly by the cell.
The pepsin assay can be used to distinguish neurohypotonic acid, when too little or lack of pepsin, the former is sometimes normal and the latter hydrochloric acid and pepsin at the same time deficiency.
It is generally believed that gastric hypoacidosis is caused by severe organic changes in gastric mucosa, especially for pernicious anemia, anacidosis, and no pepsin secretion is an important diagnostic observation.The secretion of pepsin is often reduced in chronic gastritis, chronic gastric dilatation and chronic dodecaenteritis.
