On August 1, 2014, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) officially approved Boehringer Ingelheim pharmaceuticals and Eli Lilly's Jardiance? Empagliflozin (EMPagliflozin) is used for the treatment of type 2 diabetes to improve glycemic control in adults. Empagliflozin is the third DRUG in the SGLT-2 inhibitor class approved by the FDA. Two other sGLT-2 inhibitors, Invokana? (canagliflozin), astrazeneca and bristol-myers squibb's ChemicalbookFarxiga? Dapagliflozin was approved by the FDA in November 2013 and January 2014, respectively. Empagliflozin's new drug application to the FDA has been a bumpy one. In March 2014, the FDA rejected a new drug application for Empagliflozin submitted by Boehringer and Eli Lilly Diabetes Alliance due to large particle contamination at one of Boehringer's manufacturing facilities. The FDA withdrew the warning in June 2014 after determining that boehringer's quality management and compliance systems at its drug manufacturing facilities were acceptable based on a review of boehringer's materials submitted in March.
