A Tale Of Two Seats

The majority of office design focuses on minimizing the cost of space rather than on inspiring people to work better, but a well-designed office should provide solutions to support people working on different tasks: co-working and solo working.

Employees from Generations X, Y and Z are working together and it's important to be aware that different people workbest in different conditions. To ensure the easy switch between the modes of co-working and solo-working, office space and furniture have to be flexible. This way, colleagues can choose to either interact or to work alone as best suits them.

The design concept of Gemini was to address to the demands of the two scenarios, where people can work solo or relax at a serene personal corer when the product is placed individually perhaps by the window, or where people can co-work over a discussion table when the products are placed collectively one next to another.

With a simple A-frame design, Gemini offers a standard seat of working height on one side and a reclined lounge seat with an ottoman on the other side. Users sit back-to-back on both sides (yet separated by the storage compartment in the middle) can focus on their own business respectively. The seatbacks were designed to be over-head high, covered with woven ropes with the intension to retain balance between openness and privacy. The ottoman functions as either a footrest or a pull-up stool for the visitor. The storage compartment would be a good space to put personal belongings such as carry-onluggages, gym bags or skateboards, etc.
