Single direction thrust ball bearings have two washers, with grooved raceways. The curvature of the raceways is slightly larger  than that of the ball. Out of two washers, one is shaft washer & the other one is housing washer. The bore of the shaft washer isof the shaft dia & the bore of the housing washer is slightly larger than that of shaft washer, to facilitate free rotation. These types of thrustbearings are mainly used where axial load conditions are too large to be accepted by radial bearings. They can  accept purely thrust load in single direction & they are not suitable for speed applications.
 
The thrust ball bearings are separable so that mounting is simple as the washers and the ball and cage assembly can 
be mounted separately.

II. Application of steel thrust ball bearing:
1.Thrust Ball Bearing should use close to the radial bearing, in order to prevent the effect of shafts deflection. 
2.When using big size ball bearings on a horizontal shaft, preload should be implemented to prevent the clearance between housing washer and balls.  
3.Under the inevitable circumstances of shaft deflection and misalignment, aligning seat washer should be applied.
