Cr12 steel is widely used as cold die steel, with high strength, good hardenability, and good abrasion resistance, but poor impact toughness.
AISI D3 cold work steel, also know as DIN 1.2080 (Werkstoff) and JIS SKD1, is a 12% chrome alloy steel. D3 cold work steel has very high wear resistance against abrasive and adhesive wear due to the high volume of hard carbides in the steel matrix, medium toughness, dimensionally stable, high compressive strength, not secondary hardenable. Type AISI D3 cold works tool steel is oil-quenched; though small sections can be gas quenched after austenitization using the vacuum. As a result, tools made with type D3 cold work tool steel tend to be brittle during hardening. Type D2 tool steel is the most commonly used steel among group D steels. The D3 cold work steels contain 1.5 to 2.35% of carbon and 12% of chromium.

1.Easy to be machined and ground. The machinability and grind ability are better than SKD11, so the tool life is longer and the machining time is less. |
2. The advantages of heat treatment are that the hardening capacity of quenching is higher than that of SKD11, so the defect of insufficient hardness in vacuum heat treatment can be improved. |
3. Advantages in wire cutting processing: high-temperature tempering can reduce residual stress and eliminate residual austenite, preventing cracks and deformation caused by wire cutting. |
4. Advantages of surface hardening treatment: the surface hardness after surface hardening treatment is higher than that of SKD11, so the mold performance can be improved. |
