Hydrafinil, also known by its formal name 9-Fluorenol, is a eugeroic drug. state that it is more effective at keeping the target of the drug awake. Hydrafinil is a weaker dopamine reuptake inhibitor.Hydrafini, Fluorenol is an alcohol derivative of fluorene. In the most significant isomer, fluoren-9-ol or 9-hydroxyfluorene, the hydroxy group is located on the bridging carbon between the two benzene rings. Hydroxyfluorene can be converted to fluorenone by oxidation.

Manufacturers of Hydrafinil claim that it increases norepinephrine levels specifically in the prefrontal cortex by antagonizing 5-HT6 receptor. Increase in concentrations of norepinephrine could result to improvement of cognition. However, there's no enough evidence to prove this theory.

Hydrafinil is known to enhance histamine levels in the hypothalamus. Histamine plays an important role in normalizing our circadian rhythm and regulating sleep-wake cycles.
