Willow bark contains the chemical salicin, which is the precursor to aspirin (acetyl salicylic acid).The bark was peeled from the tree trunk, and the ailing person chewed a small piece for relief ofheadaches, fevers, low back pain, and arthritis.There are multiple varieties of willow trees, but the most common type found in the United States is the white willow, or Salix alba.

Function 
Salicin is used to relieve minor aches and pains, especially those caused by inflammation, to help reduce minor fevers, and as a gastric stimulant.

Salicin was used to first produce the drug aspirin, with which it shares many similarities. Both substances, when metabolized in the human body, are partly reduced to salicylic acid. Salicylic acid was studied and found to be an inferior alternative to salicin. Aspirin was developed in an effort to create a similar but more effective compound.
