Cement Basket for Downhole Cementing
1. Introduction
Cement basket, looking like an inverted sessile umbrella, is an accessory of down hole string, an effective aid in retaining and supporting cement where weak formations and stage cementing are encountered. It consists of collar, canvas/metal fins and spring fins.
2. Application
Cement basket is an isolation device, used for preventing cement slurry from sedimentation due to being displaced with drilling fluid, during the cementing process of suspended cementing interval.
Installed at the bottom of suspended cementing interval, it supports cement in annulus to avoid or reduce the loss of cement slurry and protect the weak formation structure so as to prevent excessive static pressure generated by the weight of cement string.
It is usually installed on the casing string above the weak formation structure, but also used during stratified cementing and surface cementing. Each metal fin on the cement basket provides maximum flexibility and fluid flow passage at the same time of maintaining the optimized supporting characteristics.
