Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (abbreviated as NAD), also known as  DPN, or co-dehydrogenase I or coenzyme I. In mammals, there are two states: oxidized (NAD+) and reduced (NADH). The oxidized (NAD+) has a maximum ultraviolet absorption spectrum at 260nm. It receives a hydrogen atom and a hydrogen atom from the substrate through various deaminase enzymes. An electron becomes the reduced type (NADH Chemicalbook) and has a maximum absorption at 340nm. β-nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide is used as a coenzyme in the redox reaction, as the donor of the ADP ribose moiety in the ADP ribosylation reaction, and also as the precursor of the second messenger molecule ADP ribose. Beta-nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide also acts as a substrate for bacterial DNA ligase and a group of enzymes called sirtuins, which use NAD+ to remove acetyl groups from proteins.
