API vs. ASME/ANSI Flanges
Compatibility between pressure classes and size
 API and ASME/ANSI flanges are not necessarily interchangeable, however some of the RTJ styles from ASME B16.5 do match up dimensionally with existing API flanges. API 6A flanges in 5000# class and below are often made from A105 carbon steel with a 45K minimum yield strength, whereas the API 6BX flanges of 10000# class and above require a steel with anA even higher yield strength. The most common of those is AISI 4130 with a 75K yield.
You are more likely to find ASME/ANSI flanges in general pipeline assembly work and vessel service, whereas API flanges are often found in oilfield equipment as originally intended. B16.5 flanges will typically deal with materials such as air and high flow liquids, whereas API will handle primarily unrefined crude oil, refined petrochemicals, and high energy gases.

API and ASME/ANSI flanges - comparing dimensions and pressure ratings
Although the dimensions of ASME and API flanges may sometimes be compatible for bolting - using the same bolt circle and the same number of bolts - they do not share the same pressure rating system.

  • ASME rates the pressure of a class based on the material of construction and the design temperature
  • API specifies allowable materials and gives it a specific pressure rating
The difference between ASME/ANSI and API is the fabrication material and a higher rated API operating pressure.
ASME/ANSI flanges are commonly used in industrial process systems handling water, steam, air and gas. API flanges are manufactured for high strength operating refinery systems with products such as oil and explosive gases.
The flange standards API 6A and ASME/ANSI B16.5 have the same dimensions - but the API 6A flanges are rated for higher pressures as indicated below:

API 6A FLANGE

Type 6B Flanges:
Type 6B flanges are of the ring joint type and are not designed for face-to-face make-up. The connection make-up bolting force reacts on the metallic ring gasket. Type 6B flanges are of through bolted or studded design. Dimensions for 6B flanges blind type shall conform to Table 36, Table 37 & Table 38 with reference to figure no. 8 on pg. no. 108 of API 6A (19 th Edition, July 2004) as applicable.
Type 6BX Flanges:
Type 6BX flanges are of the ring joint type and designed with a raised face. Depending on the tolerances, the connection make-up bolting force may react on the raised face of the flange when the gasket has been properly seated. This support prevents damage to the flange or gasket from excessive bolt torque. Therefore, one of the flanges in 6 BX connection shall have a raised face. Type 6BX flanges are of through bolted or studded design. Face-to-face contact is not necessary for the proper functioning of the 6BX flange. Dimensions for 6BX flanges blind type shall conform to Table 46 of API 6A (19 th Edition, July 2004) as applicable.
