Dimethyl formamide (DMF) is a kind of organic compounds, chemical formula for HCON (CH 3) 2, colorless transparent liquid, with water and most organic solvents miscibility.
Pure dimethylformamide has a special odor, industrial grade or deteriorated dimethylformamide has a fishy smell, because it contains the impurity of dimethylamine.
The name comes from the fact that it is a dimethyl substitute for formamide (an amide of formic acid), both of which are on the N (nitrogen) atom.
It is a common solvent for chemical reactions.
As the polarity of high boiling point (hydrophilic) aprotic solvents, it can promote the SN 2 reaction mechanism.
Dimethylformamide is made from methyl formate and dimethylamine.
