Introduction:
Scutellaria Baicalensis extract was among seven ingredients in a combination oral herbal product known as PC-SPES that was used to treat prostate cancer. The U.S. Food and
Drug Administration (FDA) initiated a nationwide recall of all PC-SPES in 2002 because the capsules were found to contain varying amounts of prescription drugs.
Other combination formulas containing ScutellariaBaicalensis extract are used in Asian medicine to improve impaired brain function and to treat headaches.
Baicalin from Scutellaria Baicalensis extracts isolated compounds called flavonoids. It has significant biological activity as antibacterial, diuretic, anti-inflammatory, anti-metamorphosis
and antispasmodic effect, and has a strong anti-cancer response to the physiological performance. Has played an important role in clinical medicine. UV absorption of baicalin can remove oxygen-free radicals, but also inhibit melanin formation, therefore both are used in medicine, also can be used in cosmetics, are good functional cosmetics raw materials.
Baicalin is a flavone, a type of flavonoid. It is found in several species in the genus Scutellaria, including Scutellaria lateriflora (blue skullcap). There are 10 mg/g baicalin in Scutellaria Galericulata (common skullcap) leaves. Baicalin is the glucuronide of baicalein.
It is a component of the Chinese medicinal herb Huang-chin (Scutellaria Baicalensis) and one of the chemical ingredients of Sho-Saiko-To, an herbal supplement.
Baicalin is a known prolyl endopeptidase inhibitor, induces apoptosis in pancreatic cancer cells, and affects the GABA receptors.
