It has inhibitory effect on Shigella, Escherichia coli, Pneumococcus, Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus, Typhoid Bacillus and Amoeba. Berberine has strong anti-tumor activity in vivo and in vitro and can induce B16 cell differentiation; it has a synergistic effect with cytarabine hydrochloride in vitro.
It has a broad antibacterial spectrum, and has antibacterial effects against a variety of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria in vitro, including Streptococcus hemolyticus, Staphylococcus aureus, and Vibrio cholerae. Meningococcus, Shigella dysentery, typhoid bacillus, diphtheria bacillus, etc. have a strong inhibitory effect, inhibiting bacteria at low concentrations, and sterilizing at high concentrations. The crystals of berberine precipitated from water or dilute ethanol have 5.5 molecules of crystal water; if it is crystallized from chloroform, acetone or benzene, it also has corresponding crystal solvent molecules. Berberine is treated with different alkalis to obtain three different forms of berberine in quaternary ammonium form, aldehyde form and alcohol form, among which the quaternary ammonium form is the most stable. Berberine has antibacterial effects on hemolytic Streptococcus, Staphylococcus aureus, Neisseria gonorrhoeae, Freund and Shigella dysentery, and has the effect of enhancing the phagocytosis of leukocytes.
