The thermal stability of copper chloride is not as good as cuprous chloride, but it is more stable than cuprous chloride in aqueous solution. The copper chloride aqueous solution is yellow-green when the concentration is high, and green when the concentration is slightly lower. It is blue in medium concentration, sky blue in dilute concentration, and yellow-brown when heated. The yellow color is due to the formation of [CuCl4]2+ coordination ions, and the blue color is due to the formation of [Cu(H2O)4]2+ coordination ions. When the two coexist, they are green. It reacts with ammonia to produce beautiful dark blue copper ammonia coordination ion [Cu(NH3)4]2+. When this coordination ion is dissolved in acetic acid, it forms copper acetate ammonia solution, which can be used as an absorbent for carbon monoxide. Copper chloride reacts with strong alkali to form light blue copper hydroxide. It reacts with reducing anions such as I-, CN-, etc. to form cuprous salt (or complex) precipitation.
