Carbopol,also called Carbomer or Carboxypoly-methylene is a generic name for synthetic high molecular weight polymers of acrylic acid used as thickening, dispersing, suspending and emulsifying agents in pharmaceuticals and cosmetics. They may be homopolymers of acrylic acid, crosslinked with an allyl ether pentaerythritol, allyl ether of sucrose or allyl ether of propylene. Carbomers are found in the market as white and fluffy powders. They have the ability to absorb, retain water and swell to many times their original volume. Carbomers codes (910, 934, 940, 941 and 934P) are an indication of molecular weight and the specific components of the polymer .

1. Used as scale inhibitor and dispersant in industrial water treatment. The compatibility is good. It can also be used for drinking water pretreatment.

2. It can be used as excellent suspending agent, emulsifier, transparent matrix of high-grade cosmetics and pharmaceutical excipient matrix. It is also the most effective water-soluble thickener. It can also be used in toothpaste, as thickener and binder, and can be used in combination with other polymers

3. It is a common dispersant, which can disperse microcrystalline or sediment of calcium carbonate, calcium sulfate and other salts in water without precipitation, so as to achieve the purpose of scale inhibition.
