FAQ-Magnetic (Hotplate) Stirrer:

1.How viscous are samples that magnetic stirrers are suitable for mixing?
Answer: 100mPas, equivalent to viscosity of olive oil (cooking oil), beyond which the mixing volume and speed should reduce accordingly.

2.Why the temperature rise is too slow in hotplate stirrers?
Answer: The temperature rise of magnetic stirrers is influenced by many factors like: Excessive airflow through the fume hood Uneven contact area between vessel and hotplate surface Too large sample volume Whether the vessel is equipped with thermal insulation Size of the vessel and other factors would result in too slow temperature rise

3.How to achieve rapid temperature rise?
Use a vessel made of stainless steel or aluminum alloy Use methyl silicone oil with small specific heat value Cover the vessel in the heating process Equip the heating vessel such as beaker with thermal insulation layer or other protective measures

4.How to achieve steady temperature rise?
Must add and mix in the heating process, preferably at 600-800RPM Use water with high specific heat value or low-viscosity methyl silicone oil containing stabilizer.

5.How to avoid jittering of stirring bars of magnetic stirrers in vessel?
Answer: The jittering results from failure of stirring bars First check the vessel bottom for flatness If the vessel bottom is OK, check the stirring bar for compatibility. For round-bottom flasks, users are advised to use olive-shaped stirring bar. Smaller stirring bars are suggested for small vessels. If the reasonably chosen stirring bar still does not work, try to replace the stirring bar in order to confirm whether it is due to the degaussing of the stirring bar Moreover, excessively high rotation speed would occasionally cause the stirring bar to fail.

6.How to avoid excessive product temperature overshoot of magnetic stirrers?
Answer: The temperature overshoot of magnetic stirrers is a problem with all brands. It is possible to reduce the effect of temperature overshoot by increasing the vessel size and sample volume. Mixing in the heating process can also effectively reduce the overshoot. Moreover, presetting the temperature and placing the experimental sample into the vessel after the end of temperature overshoot can also effectively prevent the sample from being affected by overshoot.

7.How to use the temperature sensor properly?
Answer: Immerse the magnetic temperature sensor probe 20mm below the liquid surface but no less than 10mm away from the vessel bottom. Ensure that the temperature probe do not touch the vessel walls and avoid erroneous measurement.

8.Why the temperature is not stable and fluctuates remarkably when the heating temperature of the hotplate magnetic stirrer is set below 30°C?
Answer: If the heating temperature is set below 30°C, it is substantially affected by changes in room temperature due to proximity to room temperature. Placing the machine in a space with small fluctuations of ambient temperature for test will effectively address the aforesaid problem.

9.Why is it that the screen cannot be turned OFF and stirring still continues after the magnetic stirrer is shut down?
Answer: This is the residual heat warning capability of WESTTUNE magnetic stirrer, which is intended to protect the personal safety of users. When the machine is shut down with the hotplate temperature above 50°C, as long as the power supply is not disconnected, the screen would flash a "Hot Warning" indication constantly and the mixing function remains in order.
