Benefit
1 Antioxidant Effects
Many of cinnamon bark's nutritional and medicinal benefits relate to its potent antioxidant capacity. Antioxidants are compounds that protect living cells against the damage associated with free radicals -- highly reactive oxygen molecules produced in response to pollution, poor diet, cigarette smoke and stress. One study, published in 2009 in the "Journal of the American College of Nutrition," demonstrated that overweight people experienced less free radical damage while taking cinnamon supplements. By blocking the effects of free radicals, antioxidants such as cinnamon may help to prevent cardiovascular disease and certain forms of cancer.
2 Diabetes Management
Cinnamon is used in naturopathy to treat type 2 diabetes, a potentially serious medical condition which can cause dangerously high levels of glucose, or sugar, in the bloodstream. In a 2003 edition of "Diabetes Care," the American Diabetes Association published the findings of a small-scale study, which determined that daily doses of 1 to 6 grams of cinnamon can help to reduce blood glucose levels. These findings were encouraging but inconclusive; more clinical trials are needed to prove cinnamon's efficacy as an alternative or complementary treatment for diabetes.
3 Cholesterol Reduction
The American Diabetes Association says that diabetic patients taking cinnamon experienced reductions in cholesterol and triglyceride levels, while those taking a placebo did not experience these effects. The same study in "Diabetes Care" that showed cinnamon's effects on blood sugar, showed that cinnamon use also reduced triglycerides by 30 percent, LDL or bad cholesterol by 27 percent and total cholesterol by 26 percent. The study did not show a change in HDL or good cholesterol.
4 Soothing an upset stomach
Cinnamon extracts have been used medically to treat gastrointestinal problems and to help calm the stomach. Cinnamon is a carminative, an agent that helps break up intestinal gas that has traditionally been used to combat diarrhea and morning sickness. Both test-tube and some animal studies have found that cinnamon may help to relieve mild abdominal discomfort caused by excess gas. It is used in flatulent dyspepsia, dyspepsia with nausea, intestinal colic and digestive atony associated with cold & debilitated conditions. It is known to relieve nausea and vomiting, and because of its mild astringency it is particularly used for infantile diarrhea.
5 Antibacterial
In an evaluation of the antibacterial activity of 21 plant essential oils against six bacterial species, cinnamon came out on top. The selected essential oils were screened against six bacteria: Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa,Proteus vulgaris, Bacillus subtilis, and Staphylococcus aureus. Cinnamon oil was found to inhibit all of them, even at low concentrations, and was determined to be a good source of antibacterial agents.
When cinnamon extract was tested against a resistant Candida species in five patients with HIV infection and oral candidiasis, three of the five patients exhibited improvement of their Candida infection.
A recent Chinese study of cinnamon extracts found they were effective in inhibiting the growth of various bacteria including: Staphylococcus aureus, E. coli,Enterobacter aerogenes, Proteus vulgaris, Pseudomonas aeruginosa,Vibrio parahaemolyticus and Samonella typhymurium, and fungi including yeasts (four species of Candida, C. albicans, C. tropicalis, C. glabrata, and C. krusei), and molds.
6 Anti-inflammatory
As an anti-inflammatory agent, cinnamon may be useful in preventing or mitigating arthritis as well as cardiovascular disease. And as scientists increasingly understand the relationship between inflammation function in Alzheimer's (causing some to refer to the neurodegenerative disease as "type 3 diabetes"), cinnamon's ability to block inflammation and enhance function may make it useful in combating that disease as well. As an anti-inflammatory agent, cinnamon may be useful in preventing or mitigating arthritis as well as cardiovascular disease.
7 Weight Losing
Cinnamon extract supplements cause significant decreases in fasting blood glucose, the study says, which suggests it may reduce risk factors that are associated with diabetes. Diabetes is often linked to obesity-induced resistance. When you end up with more fat cells and fewer muscle cells, your levels of glucose and stay elevated. Elevated levels of visceral fat, meaning belly fat, are linked to extra fat storage in your liver, which may in turn raise your blood sugar levels. If your waist is larger than your hips, chances are you are on the path to resistance, notes Janet Sanders, author of "The Diabetes Coach Approach Workbook." In fact, the more overweight you are, the worse your resistance becomes.
