How to remove the water?

There are several ways to remove water and moisture from compressed air.

1. The first method is overcompression, the pressure is increased to a level above the required compressed air pressure and at this higher pressure the free water droplets are removed. In the next step, the pressure is decreased to the required compressed air pressure. From this stage, only water vapor is present in the compressed air, the relative humidity dropped below 100%.

2. A second method is cooling, the compressed air is cooled down to a lower temperature. At this lower temperature, the relative humidity exceeds 100% and free water droplets are formed. Those free water droplets are collected and removed. In the next step the temperature of the compressed air is increased again. From
this stage, only water vapor is present in the compressed air, the relative humidity dropped below 100%.

3. As third method chemical drying is often used, the moisture is removed by absorption or adsorption in a certain substance. With absorption, the moisture is captured in a hygroscopic liquid or powder. The moisture is attached to this material and needs to be removed and replaced by new material for further operation.

With adsorption, the moisture is captured in hygroscopic beads. The moisture molecules are transported into the pores through diffusion and are accumulated through physical binding and capillary condensation. In this case, when the beads are saturated, they have to be regenerated before they can start adsorbing again. The regeneration
can be done by heating the beads or by sending extreme dry air over the beads. In both cases the water retaining forces are broken and the water molecules are removed.

Types of compressed air dryers

Refrigeration dryers
Refrigeration dryers are used for PDPs between +3°C/37.4°F to +10°C/50°F with the freezing point of water (0°C/ 32°F) as the lower limit.

By cooling the compressed air with a closed refrigeration
system a large amount of water condenses and can be
separated. Afterwards the compressed air is reheated
with the incoming air to around room temperature. In this
way the moisture content of the air stays well below the
maximum moisture holding capacity at normal (nonfreezing) ambient temperatures, meaning that the relative humidity stays below 100%. It is recommended to stay below 50% relative humidity to avoid any condensation to happen on local cold spots of the piping network.


 

Adsorption dryers
Adsorption dryers are used when PDPs from -10°C/14°F down to -70°C/-94°F are to be achieved.

 


They make use of a material which has a high affinity
to attract moisture, so called hygroscopic material
or desiccant. The adsorption of moisture causes the
desiccant to be gradually saturated with water.

Therefore, the desiccant needs to be regenerated
regularly to regain its drying capacity. Adsorption dryers
are typically built with two drying vessels ("towers")
for that purpose: the first tower will dry the incoming
compressed air while the second one is being
regenerated. To ensure continuity, each vessel switches
tasks when the other one is completely regenerated.
